This is where we refine it.

Before I come up with any definite marketing or sale messages, I'll engage at least 5 or 6 paying clients, and based on those engagements I'll answer these questions.

Another way to use this is to reflect on a past client that you really enjoyed working with.

My goal is to better understand the problem I'm solving and why what I'm offering is the ideal solution.

The Lock (Customer Side):

  1. WHO - How do they describe themselves, and what about their identity makes them likely to face the problem you solve?
  2. WHAT - What does their problem look and feel like? How do they describe it, and how frequently does it trouble them?
  3. WHEN - When does the prospect face this issue, and how much time does it waste?
  4. WHERE - What other areas of their life or work does the problem impact?
  5. WHY - Why can't they solve the problem on their own? What makes it unique to them? Get to the root cause.
  6. HOW (Part 1) - What have they tried before to solve the problem, and why did those attempts fail?
  7. IF (Part 1) - What will their life look like if they don't find your solution? How will the problem continue or get worse?

The Key (Service Provider Side):

  1. WHO - Who are you in relation to the prospect, and why are you uniquely suited to solve their problem?
  2. WHAT - What are the concrete features and benefits of your solution, and how do they directly address the prospect's needs?
  3. WHEN - When can they resolve their issue using your solution?
  4. WHERE - In what other areas can your solution provide additional value beyond solving the main problem?
  5. WHY - Why is your solution the best and most logical choice? What makes it stand out from alternatives?
  6. HOW (Part 2) - How does your solution work, and what's the process for them to obtain it?
  7. IF (Part 2) - What will the customer's life look like once they've solved their problem with your solution?
