How to use Afterpay with Squarespace

Update: The hybrid method described in this article doesn’t work. To use afterpay you need a fully compatible platform like Shopify.

Afterpay is a huge benefits to customers who want to buy now and pay later allowing businesses to convert more and grow faster.

What is Afterpay?

Afterpay is a pay later program that lets your customers buy now and pay in 4 installments, interest free. With Afterpay customers payments are taken automatically every 2 weeks for 8 weeks. It’s one of the fastest growing payment methods and you’ve probably seen it on some of your favorite retailers.

What are the benefits of Afterpay for store owners?

Giving your customers affordable and flexible options to pay lead to more sales. Shoppers who would have abandoned their cart because of price end up sticking around and becoming customers.

As a retailer, your payments are guaranteed upfront by Afterpay with zero fraud or credit risk. Afterpay assumes the risk is a customer doesn’t pay.

How to integrate Aftepay with Squarespace

Ok, time for some bad news, good news.

You currently can’t use Afterpay with Squarespace Commerce (bad news) but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.

The best option we have of getting this to work is by creating a hydrid Squarespace - Shopify store.

What that means is your products and checkout are handled by Shopify and the rest of your site is run on Squarespace.

This allows you to leverage Shopify + Afterpay without ditching Squarespace.

Cons?

It’s more expensive but don’t fret. It’s relatively simple.

How To Integrate Afterpay With Shopify

Afterpay’s integration with Shopify is easy to setup - you’ll just need to register with Afterpay first as a retailer.

Step 1.

Login to Shopify and add Afterpay as a payment method. Settings > Payment Providers > Alternative Payments and select ‘Afterpay’.

Step 2:

Enter your Merchant ID and secret Merchant Key provided by Afterpay

Step 3.

Implement the dynamic logo with theme by going to Online Store > Theme > Edit Code.

Afterpay has documentation for this step. There’s a script used to integrate with the Shopify product template, seen here. You’ll insert that script between product pricing and the add to cart button. Once you save and refresh your product page will look like this.

Step 4.

Now you can verify it works by going through the checkout process. You should see Afterpay as an option.
